Introduction

This project continues and extends our efforts to learn and to promote Asia Industry-University Teaching and Research Cooperative Consortium in 2010. Our previously funded project, Developing an Asian IT Case Series (AITCS) Consortium, as executed well with positive feedbacks. Faculty members from Ming-Chi University and other universities had exciting new learning experience regarding conducting case studies. We had conducted 2 seminars and delivered 6 speeches. The attendance is high and discussion ardent.

Regarding of last project, the main objective for this project is to develop an Asian IT Case Series (AITCS) Consortium at Ming-Chi University of Technology. Similar to last year’s project, we go further propose two types of activities: Developing Asia Industry-University teaching workshop and research cooperative consortium. As same as last project, this project is a joined project between Ming Chi University of Technology and the National University of Singapore (NUS). NUS is a leading university in academic research. We aim to explore strategic opportunities for Ming Chi University of Technology through raising faculty interests in case study and resulting in added values for our faculty members and students. The motivation of this project comes from our belief that students can learn from case studies of best industry-university teaching and research practices. It is necessary to prepare our faculty with global vision and awareness of best industry-university teaching and research practices in Asia. Our effort is an initial step to prepare faculty members both within and outside Ming-Che University of Technology for the new teaching and approach. Furthermore, we plan to make available all the cases, workshop discussions, and discussions to faculty members and students in both Ming-Che University of Technology and NUS. .

Format: Asia Industry-University Teaching and Research Cooperative Consortium will be conducted by means of conference, seminar and workshop. Students of NUS and Ming-Che University of Technology are welcome to participate in case development on-line at AITCS (http://aitcs.nus.edu,sg). Twice a year Asia Industry-University Case Study workshops will also be organized at Ming-Chi University of Technology and jointly organized by faculty members of Ming Chi University and NUS. Faculty Members of Ming Chi University of Technology will also visit NUS to conduct research and teaching discussions. It is aimed that 2-4 cases a year will be jointly developed and published .

Opportunity: Ming-Chi University of Technology has a unique learning environment. Students are required to live in the University dorm. Students interact intensively with faculty members during regular semester. In the third year of their studies, students work for a real company to gain practical experiences. Giving the students real life case materials conducted with Asian organizations can provide additional education values to our students. Cases co-authored by faculty members of Ming Chi University of Technology and NUS will provide excellent insights into the industry-university best practices in Taiwanese firms and government agencies. Combining co-authoring the cases and using them in classroom teaching will provide excellent opportunities to appreciate the important lessons learned from going beyond textbooks. This also creates a new education model and new market for education institutes whose missions are similar to Ming-Chi University of Technology.

Execution: The execution plan can roughly be divided into three phases. The first phase is to recruit a group of faculty members as “seed” members. The objective is to identify faculty members who are interested in developing their teaching cases. These seed faculty members will form the main body of the initial consortium. The second phase aim is to encourage the “seed” members to develop high quality teaching cases. The third phase is the phase where the teaching cases are used in actual classroom teaching. Rewriting of the teaching cases will take place in this stage.

Implementation: Activities of phases 1 and 2 will take place in Spring 2010. A case study workshop on how to conduct case studies will take place in Ming-Che University of Technology. The focus of the workshop will be on teaching the participants on how case studies are conducted. Participants will then work on a couple of cases studies. Activities of phases 3 and 4 will take place in Fall 2009. Faculty members of Ming Che University of Technology and NUS will co-organize the workshops. Faculty members of Ming Che University of Technology will travel to NUS to discuss and share their case writing and case teaching experience.
